Starting a restaurant in the new year? Looking to change up your current menu? Or maybe you just really like food and want to know more (you are on a site dedicated to picking up food).

Whatever your reason is, you’re in luck. It just so happens that we’re just as into data as we are amazing food, and so the data scientists here at Ritual have pulled together some of the tastiest info you’ve ever seen on what cuisines and foods our users ordered most in 2019.

Agree? Disagree? Just looking for an internet conversation? Share your thoughts with us @ritual_co on Twitter. Now, let’s dig into that data!

Ritual’s most popular cuisine types in 2019

Sorry, pizza - healthy options dominated the Ritual charts in 2019. With juices, smoothies, salads, and wraps all in the top five, 2019 was the year of treating your body right. International cuisine also broke the charts, with seafood (which includes sushi) coming in at #1, and Mexican, poké and burritos doing pretty well for themselves.

Of course, not every food type is popular all year long. According to Google trends, our Ritual data, and common sense, salads tend to be seasonal, peaking in the warmer months, and slowing down come winter. Smoothies, or as we like to call them, ‘healthy milkshakes,’ also see a similar spike in warmer months. Our expert advice? Don’t start a salad and smoothie restaurant in the winter. See? We told you this would be informative!

Cuisine types with the highest return rates

Looking to open the next ‘Cheers,’ where you know every customer’s name? Not only does Ritual make it easy by putting the name of the customer on every order (they’ll be so impressed you remembered them!), we also tracked the items with the highest return rates.

The results? Beverages rule the roost. Coffee, tea, bubble teas and smoothies all rank high when it comes to returning customers. What can we say? People love a low-cost item they can customize just how they like it, returning for their daily fix.

So there you have it - some of 2019’s hottest food trends, as determined by your friendly neighbourhood pick up app, Ritual. Think 2020 will be any different? Will burgers take over from salads? Will pineapple pizza be the next big thing? Only time will tell!

In the meantime, share your thoughts with us, and reach out if you want more insights on how Ritual can help your business in 2020, bringing you new customers, keeping those customers coming back, and opening your restaurant up to a whole new digital world.
